Budget range top box that is solid enough to get you storing and touring with very little cost.

Initial Thoughts

As far as a cheap and cheerful top box goes I was not expecting great things from the FD-Moto FD-02 model, with dimensions only rated at 1 full face and 1 open face helmet it is actually pretty roomy and its 42 litres seem quite ample, this is one of only a few top boxes that I have seen sporting a backrest out of the box which is a nice feature and certainly useful for a pillion while touring. Also in the box you get a universal base plate and mounting kit that while on the budget side works perfectly well at its job and keeps the box in place.

Construction

Made of a standard plastic construction but in a matt finish rather than gloss the FD-02 is solid enough and when closed did not flex or bend without serious pressure being given to it, the seal stayed nicely in place too which gave me confidence that it would stay leak free in the rain. When opening the top box the first thing that springs to mind is the cheap feel of the clasp which is reinforced further once the box is open and the screws around the inside were not totally lined up or screwed in on 2 or 3 of them and the screw behind the lock mechanism was protruding quite far some reason.

That said though they were not sharp or sticking out in such a way that they would have caused issue - simply that they looked unfinished but at less than £50 what can you expect really? The base plate is a steel affair with rails and long bolts for fitting to your rack, I found the bolts far too long and they just looked untidy so off I went and bought the right size which when tightened did not show below the base plate and also meant access under the rack was less treacherous for straps.

FEATURES:

  • Can fit 1 full face XXL helmets for some models of helmet; But some helmets could not be put in the box in our testing result.

  • Comes with metal mounting plate and fittings

  • Equipped with a quick release system

  • A comfortable back rest

  • Elastic straps inside of the top box

  • Polypropylene construction

  • Waterproof

  • Built in reflector

  • Lockable with 2 keys

  • 45 Litre capacity

Product size: 54*40*27 CM

Conclusion

Not a bad offering at all, the cheapness of the lock clasp meant that it drops points for security and the general finish of the inside meant the same for points in quality but in terms of being a top box that kept rain out it worked as advertised.

This is certainly no Givi but nor is the price and when you see that a Givi backrest costs as much as this entire unit (that includes a backrest as standard) it really becomes a no-brainer for those looking at putting luggage on a bike for the first time or on a budget!
