Shane 'Shakey' Byrne gets his backside in a saddle of a different kind soon as he swaps horse power for pedal power, the two time British Superbike Champion heads off on the London-Paris cycle ride, organised by HotChillee, on the 23rd June and set to arrive at the Eiffel Tower just three days and 520km later. The London-Paris ha been undertaken by a number of distinguished sportsmen including Stephen Roche, Nigel Mansell and Will Carling, shakey will be in the saddle of a Specialized bike, supported by Corley Cycles and Mavic and is said to be looking forward to the adventure - and speed - of the journey, he says:
“The London-Paris is no ordinary cycle event and it will be such a cool achievement to say I have done it. People don’t realise the fitness levels needed to ride a superbike and cycling has been accounting for about 80% of my training for two years now. I regularly spend two to three hours pedaling in Costa Brava in Spain where I live and from a cardio point of view I find the activity second to none. I also like the speed – not as fast as a superbike, but the cornering techniques on a fast descent are comparable! I mainly train alone so I am looking forward to the experience of cycling in The L2P peloton and being part of a group. The thought of The L2P distance is daunting but I’m not fazed by it.”
The London-Paris is distinguished by having motorbike outriders, rolling road closures, Mavic neutral services and professional logistical back-up along the route. In Paris, The L2P is one of only two events granted road closures in the centre of the French capital - the other is the Tour de France. The peloton, with its 45 motorbike outriders, rolls along the famous Parisian streets to an emotional finish. Shakey joins 375 cyclists, riding in five seeded speed groups, which are supported by HotChillee’s 100- strong crew including mechanics, sports therapists and experienced Ride Captains.
