Buying braided brake lines

Written by
Coloured braided brake hoses Coloured braided brake hoses Venhill
Stop and think before upgrading brake lines advise Venhill It has long been recognized that fitting braided lines can improve both the performance and reliability of a motorcycle’s braking system; the stainless steel braid that is wrapped around the core prevents further pressure expansion and helps protect the core against damage from stones, road debris or accident impact.
However, for optimum performance, there are some key questions to be answered before investing in braided hoses.

What quality is the braided steel?
Marine grade stainless steel braid is more resistant to corrosion than the ‘standard’ grade that is commonly used and will prolong the life of the lines.

What material is the inner core made from? Many aftermarket braided lines use cheap nylon hoses. However DuPont® Teflon® offers much greater resistance to heat compared to nylon, not only preventing softening, expansion and loss of shape, but is also constructed with a consistent internal diameter and smooth bore, delivering more efficient fluid flow.

Are the lines protected? Top quality lines are covered with an extruded PVC jacket to help prevent wear and deterioration due to sunlight, chemicals and movement. This is bonded to the braid to prevent the ingress of water, road salt and debris. How are the lines connected? Threaded swivel fittings allow the lines to be positioned with zero twist. Many cheap lines offer no banjo adjustment at all, or require removal and the use of a special tool to rotate the banjo before re-installation.

Coping with pressure? Brake lines need to operate under extreme pressure, which is one of the reasons for upgrading to braided types. So it is important that lines are individually tested before leaving the factory. Making the grade All Venhill braided brake hoses are manufactured using marine grade stainless braid with a DuPont® Teflon® core and are covered with an extruded PVC jacket. Their Powerhose Plus range is supplied with swivel fittings. For further peace of mind, every hose that leaves the Venhill factory is pressure tested to 1500psi. In addition, every 30 days random hoses are pressure tested up to 10,000psi. That is why Venhill lines meet and exceed both American DOT and German TUV requirements – one of the few production brake lines to meet both standards.

Produced with PVC jackets in 10 eye-catching colours, with banjos and bolts in polished stainless or high quality, chrome-plated steel, for details of the full range contact Venhill on 01306 885111, or visit: www.venhill.co.uk
